This healthy watermelon berry smoothie is a refreshing taste of summer. The watermelon serves as the liquid in this smoothie, making it dairy-free, nut-free, and coconut free.

I like to use a mix of fresh and frozen fruit in this smoothie. I had frozen blueberries today, so that's what I used. But you could easily substitute frozen raspberries, or just use extra ice.

When you load the blender, be sure to put the watermelon on the bottom. It will liquefy and make it easier to blend the ice and frozen fruit. I use a high-speed blender to make it extra smooth.

I love sitting on the deck with my watermelon blueberry smoothie — perfect for a hot summer day.

Why You'll Love This Smoothie

Watermelon is basically organically sweetened water encased in a thick melon rind. It's one of the best fruits you can eat during the warm months to keep yourself hydrated.

Blending watermelon into a smoothie gives you the opportunity to enjoy it in its raw form and paired with other seasonal fruits for a naturally sweet and refreshing beverage. No added sweetener needed!

As you'll see below, you can make delicious watermelon smoothies by combining it with different fruits as they come into season. You may never make the same watermelon smoothie recipe twice with all the yummy options!

What Kind Of Watermelon Should I Use

It doesn't matter which variety of watermelon, seedless or with seeds, that you use. I find that the seeds are easy to remove when cutting into chunks, so I don't worry too much about that. Use whichever you feel the most comfortable with, but make sure it's ripe for the best flavor.

How To Tell If A Watermelon Is Ripe

From thumping on a watermelon to exploring its markings, there are certain tell-tale signs that suggest a watermelon may be ripe and ready to enjoy.

  • Weight - Since watermelon is composed mainly of water, the watermelon should actually be heavy, no matter its size. You want to make sure its water weight is apparent.

  • Markings - A watermelon's rind and markings should be darker shades of green rather than pale.

  • Spots - Check for a yellow spot on the underside of the melon. If the spot is pale or white, avoid it and keep looking.

  • Sound - Listen for a deep and hollow sound when you thump on the watermelon.

Ingredients Needed To Make This Smoothie

  • Cubed watermelon - Fresh watermelon stands in for the liquid in the smoothie, although you can use frozen to help give the smoothie a frosty texture

  • Fresh raspberries - pairs perfectly with the watermelon

  • Frozen blueberries - pairs perfectly with the watermelon and adds sweetness

  • Ice cubes - keeps the smoothie cold and adds extra hydration

How To Make This Smoothie

Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender in the order listed and blend until smooth. Note: Be sure and add the watermelon cubes first so they can liquify at the bottom of the blender.

Fruit Variations

Keeping watermelon as the dominant fruit in this smoothie, you'll no doubt want to pair it with other seasonal fruits for delicious and refreshing combinations.

In addition to pairing it with the raspberries and blueberries in my recipe, try pairing 2 cups of frozen watermelon chunks (and ice) with the following ideas:

  • Strawberries - add 1 cup of frozen strawberries and the juice of one lime.

  • Cucumber - add 1 cup cucumber, peeled and cut into chunks and the lime juice.

  • Ginger, Lime, Mint - add the juice of one lime, freshly grated ginger to taste and garnish with freshly chopped mint leaves.

  • Kiwi and Pineapple - add 2 peeled and chopped kiwi and 1 cup of frozen pineapple chunks.

  • Melon Extravaganza - add 1 cup frozen or fresh honeydew chunks and 1 cup frozen or fresh cantaloupe chunks and the juice of one lime.

  • Blackberries and Honeydew - add ½ cup blackberries and ½ cup frozen or fresh honeydew chunks and the juice of one lime.

  • Pineapple - add 1 cup of frozen pineapple chunks and fresh mint for garnish

  • Banana - add ¾ cup frozen banana chunks.

To serve this delicious smoothie, simply pour it into a tall glass and enjoy it right away. For a fun twist, you can also turn it into fruit popsicles by pouring the mixture into molds and freezing them for a quick and refreshing treat.

If you're hosting a summer gathering, this smoothie can also be transformed into a frozen mocktail. Just pour it into a festive glass, add a fruit garnish, a paper umbrella, and you're all set to enjoy a refreshing drink.

Unfortunately, leftovers of this watermelon smoothie won't keep well in the fridge. To save any extras, pour them into popsicle molds and freeze them for a later snack.
