"Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind."
Henry James
"Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending."
Maria Robinson
Being kind to yourself in everyday life is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It can make life lighter, improve relationships, increase happiness, boost self-esteem, and enhance your sense of deserving good things. This topic is a favorite of mine and the foundation of my popular program, The Self-Esteem Course.
However, self-kindness is often neglected or viewed with guilt. To make a positive change, start a new habit today—one of kindness and love towards yourself. Here are 10 favorite habits that can help:
1. Invest in yourself.
Spend 15-30 minutes in the morning or evening reading, listening to, or watching material that uplifts you, helps you understand yourself and the world, or improves your life. Then, take a small action based on what you've learned.
2. Find the truth and exception when facing criticism.
When your inner or outer critic attacks, look for exceptions to the criticism. This helps change your thoughts and find a more balanced truth that doesn't bring you down.
3. Unwind and destress.
Take time to relax in a bath, work out, or talk to someone about what's on your mind. Release tensions and stress to be kind to your body and mind.
4. Appreciate yourself daily.
Take a few minutes each day to appreciate yourself. Reflect on three things you value about yourself, big or small, to create a kinder self-image.
5. Take a positive step on a mediocre day.
If your day feels dull, take a small step towards something positive to inject hope and optimism. Book a trip, meet a friend, explore career growth, or try a new hobby.
6. Be kinder to others.
Being kind to others can translate into being kinder to yourself. Practice kindness towards others to cultivate self-understanding and compassion.
7. Support yourself like a best friend.
Instead of self-criticism, be a supportive friend to yourself. Learn from mistakes, find opportunities in challenges, and move forward with kindness.
8. Take a laughter break.
Watch or read something funny to recharge your energy and release tension. Laughter can boost optimism and rejuvenate your spirit.
9. Focus on the future.
Avoid dwelling on past mistakes and instead focus on what you want in the future. Take small steps towards your goals each day to create a brighter path ahead.
10. Remind yourself of the benefits of self-kindness.
By understanding the advantages of being kind to yourself, such as improved results, higher self-esteem, and better relationships, it becomes easier to prioritize self-care in daily life.
