Where does Aquamin come from?
Lithothamnion thrives in the pristine waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, particularly where the warmer Gulf Stream meets the colder Arctic seas.
Aquamin is sourced from the nutrient-rich waters of Fjord Arnarfjörður in the remote North-West of Iceland, known for its legendary sea monsters.
As the algae matures, its mineral content increases, eventually leading to calcification, death, and the formation of mineral-rich deposits on the ocean floor, which are then collected.
The harvesting process is meticulously planned to minimize disturbance to the sea bed. Aquamin is collected for a limited period each week between May and September, allowing live Lithothamnion to thrive undisturbed while only the mineral-rich remnants are harvested.
During harvesting, a grid system is used to prevent overworking any specific area of the ocean bed. Once gathered, Lithothamnion is washed and milled to create the final Aquamin product.
